Local Wood Sourcing

I wanted to confirm a fact about our timber supply: We are one of the few larger firewood companies that actually source their timber locally!

The rise in wood-burning stove installations means there simply isn’t enough locally produced timber to supply all of them. In regions like Tayside and Angus in Scotland, the high density of firewood suppliers has forced some to import wood. This is also true in certain areas of England.

Fortunately for us, being one of the few large firewood processors in Southern Scotland, we have access to substantial amounts of good-quality hardwood. We also benefit from a network of busy tree surgeons who bring us their log waste for processing.

This means that unlike some very large household names, all our wood is locally sourced.

The imported logs are often easily identifiable by the tightly stacked wooden crates they arrive in. These crates are necessary due to the long journeys the logs take from Eastern Europe and the Baltic states. The road miles involved in this transportation are enormous, contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Notably, many of these countries share borders with Russia, which adds complexity to the sourcing transparency.

Although tight stacking is a clever idea for transport, it’s uneconomical here in the UK due to higher labour standards and costs, making these crates a clear sign of imported timber.

We offer two main products made exclusively with our local timber:

  • A pure, high-quality kiln-dried hardwood available in both 10" and smaller 8" lengths.
  • A budget mixed stovewood option that uses perfectly acceptable lower-grade timber, including softwoods and waste from tree surgeons. The mix varies depending on what materials are delivered to our yard. This product is only available in 10" lengths due to the difficulty in processing logs with more knots and twists.

By sourcing locally, we reduce road miles significantly compared to imported timber, which helps lower our carbon footprint. Supplying timber from nearby woodlands supports the green economy by promoting sustainable forestry and reducing emissions from long-distance transport. Local sourcing also means timber is part of a more balanced carbon cycle, where trees are responsibly felled and replanted, helping maintain healthy ecosystems and carbon sequestration.

We are proud to play our part in offering a sustainable firewood option that respects both the environment and the communities we serve.
